From Seller/Antiquarian, AHA-BUCH GmbH [51283250], Einbeck, NDS, Germany

This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware - Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 47. Chapters: Bharati Krishna Tirtha's Vedic mathematics, Aryabhata, Tantrasamgraha, Katapayadi system, Shulba Sutras, Aryabhata's sine table, Madhava's sine table, Yuktibhasa, Aryabhatiya, Karanapaddhati, Chakravala method, Principles of Hindu Reckoning, Bhaskara I's sine approximation formula, Kriyakramakari, Indian numbering system, Golagrama, Jya, koti-jya and utkrama-jya, Bhutasamkhya system, Bakhshali manuscript, Sadratnamala, Reuben Burrow, C. M. Whish, Achyuta Pisharati, Lilavati, Vedic square, Mahavira, Lalla, Kos, Bhaskara's lemma, Va¿esvara-siddhanta. Excerpt: Indian mathematics emerged in the Indian subcontinent from 1200 BCE until the end of the 18th century. In the classical period of Indian mathematics (400 AD to 1200 AD), important contributions were made by scholars like Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, and Bhaskara II. The decimal number system in use today was first recorded in Indian mathematics. Indian mathematicians made early contributions to the study of the concept of zero as a number, negative numbers, arithmetic, and algebra. In addition, trigonometry was further advanced in India, and, in particular, the modern definitions of sine and cosine were developed there. These mathematical concepts were transmitted to the Middle East, China, and Europe and led to further developments that now form the foundations of many areas of mathematics. Ancient and medieval Indian mathematical works, all composed in Sanskrit, usually consisted of a section of sutras in which a set of rules or problems were stated with great economy in verse in order to aid memorization by a student. This was followed by a second section consisting of a prose commentary (sometimes multiple commentaries by different scholars) that explained the problem in more detail and provided justification for the solution. In the prose section, the form (and therefore its memorization) was not considered as important as the ideas involved. All mathematical works were orally transmitted until approximately 500 BCE; thereafter, they were transmitted both orally and in manuscript form. The oldest extant mathematical document produced on the Indian subcontinent is the birch bark Bakhshali Manuscript, discovered in 1881 in the village of Bakhshali, near Peshawar (modern day Pakistan) and is likely from the 7th century CE. A later landmark in Indian mathematics was the development of the series expansions for trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, and arc tangent) by mathematicians of the Kerala school in the 15th century CE. Their remarkable work, completed two centu 60 pp. Englisch

Excerpt: ryabha a's sine table is a set of twenty-four of numbers given in the astronomical treatise ryabha iya composed by the fifth century Indian mathematician and astronomer ryabha a (476 550 CE), for the computation of the half-chords of certain set of arcs of a circle. It is not a table in the modern sense of a mathematical table; that is, it is not a set of numbers arranged into rows and columns. Arc and chord of a circle Arc and jya (half-chord) It is only a collection of numbers appearing as a Sanskrit stanza in ryabha iya and is couched in the special numerical notation invented by ryabha a himself. This stanza is the tenth one (excluding the stanza containing the invocation and a stanza which is an explanation of ryabha a's numerical notation ) in the first section of ryabhatiya titled Da ag tikas tra. ryabha a's table is also not a set of values of the trigonometric sine function in a conventional sense; it is a table of the first differences of the values of trigonometric sines expressed in arcminutes, and because of this the table is also referred to as ryabha a's table of sine-differences. ryabha a's table was the first ever sine table to be constructed in the history of mathematics. The now lost tables of Hipparchus (c.190 BC c.120 BC) and Menelaus
